IF_you want the ultimate fabric

We wear fabric against our skin every day, yet most of us know remarkably little about what it is made from or what its production leaves behind.  So we ask: what would make a fabric truly worthy of being called ultimate?

Why we ask

The question began with a wardrobe inventory. More than forty percent of the garments examined contained polyester—a plastic-based fibre associated with fossil resources and the release of microfibres during wear and washing. But replacing synthetics with a material labelled “natural” does not automatically resolve the problem: cotton may demand intensive irrigation and agricultural inputs, while regenerated fibres such as viscose can depend on chemically intensive processing.

The search for an ultimate fabric is therefore not a search for a miraculous fibre or a comforting sustainability claim. It is an investigation into trade-offs. We want to understand whether a material can support the skin, withstand years of use, be repaired and eventually return safely to a biological or technical cycle—while respecting the soil, water, workers, animals, knowledge, and places involved in making it.
